When Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended 6 years ago I classed this show and something along the same lines of high school musical. Overhyped and Overrated. Having only ever seen glimpses of it as I passed channels (even the whole of the musical episode "once more with feeling") I found it to be tacky and cheap.
If I could go back in time, I would punch myself in the face. Thanks to some forceful encouraging and promise of food induced sleepovers I finished watching all 7 seasons for the first time resently. It isn't infact tacky and cheap. It is probably the most wonderful and sophisticated pieces of television I have ever watched. Even 6 years later, having seen so many of the shows that were inspired by buffy, I can still recognise the pure originality of it. How is it possible for a show to successfully genre as Horror, Action, Comedy, Romance, Drama, Fantasy, Mystery and even Musical!? For it to be so Powerful and epic, but so down to earth at the same time. The series really does speak down at the audiences level. One of the clever things about buffy is the ability to recognise it's own stupidity. It is constantly parodying itself and even the title "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" pokes fun out of tacky cliche. There would be moments within the show where there would be a predictable seriousness and yet somehow unexpectedly poke fun at the situation. The strange thing is I will still find myself crying at this show, as it still able to engage and relate with the audience. Through all the slaying and monsters you will find that the show is largely based around real problems even at times demonstrating them in a metaphorical sense. An episode called 'hush' was about the threat of demons that stopped you from speaking, but was really about the idea of people being unable to communicate. I find it so clever that a show so action packed could display a subtle poetry. Now the poetry wasn't the crying part.. Im not that pathetic. The crying part is the amazing characters that you can't help but engage with. I could probably go on for about another 1000 words really, but I probably wont since alot of you have probably stopped reading already. All Im saying is that if you haven't watched this show, I cannot express how much I reccommend you do. If you really want to experience ground breaking television then you need to watch this as it is simply an unpredictable work of art. You will be worshipping Joss Whedon in no time. NOW ABOUT THE PICTURE Now after that epic essay, I can safetly say that this image really just does not sum it up. But it's ok because it's probably not the last time you'll see me draw buffy fanart. This kinda got me out of that art block I was in. Although you can probably see that Im still suffering from it as I chose to draw semi-realistic instead of having the confidence to charicature. I spent way too long on this and probably overdid it.. I wasn't sure when to stop drawing and editing really. For this I was pretty much inspired by this Star Trek Poster : [link] Aswell as a bit of: [link] But don't compare too much, since my image will instantly lose any shred of credibility I used SO much reference that I might aswell of traced the images to be honest. But it's gotten a tiny bit back into the swing so Im looking the positive sides. ANYWAY I think I type too much. |

I completely agree with you about the series btw. Just wondering, how do you feel about the season 8 comics?
Who is your favorite character?

Love the compoistion here, and Buffy's curious expression. Sort of sweet and psychotic and sarcastic in one; just like the show

"You two, we're at the end of the universe, eh? Right at the edge of knowledge itself, and you're busy ... blogging!"
I've ACTually only started reading the comics.. just read volume one. Not sure what I think at the moment.. but quite content i think... since the characters in the comic ring very true to the tv show. anyway we'll seeeeee. I'll get back to you once I am up to date.
I have to say though, buffy ended pretty much perfectly in my opinion.. Im hoping I wont canon the comics too much in my head incase they ruin it.
The only thing I didn't like about the series finale was what happened with Anya, but I maybe biased because she was one of my favourites. But yeah, it pretty much left the story on a perfect note otherwise.
The favourite character question is really hard because I love all of them pretty much in their own way and each one was probably my favourite at one point or another. If I HAD to choose one then... I reckon maybe willow. Although I have a soft spot for anya definatly.
